Just wanted to say hi to everyone on this new forum. I play guitar, but cello is my main instrument. I started playing in the 4th grade, took lessons and all of that, quit my sophomore year in college, and picked it back up about two years ago. It's been interesting to see which aspects of my playing are (and are not) like riding a bicycle. Lately I've been having a lot of fun experimenting with different effects pedals. I love Unwoman's music and style. I try to sing and play like Unwoman, but every time I do, my bow arm locks up. Hoping to overcome that someday. And I'm also hoping that a few of you might be (un)inspired (get it? )enough to try to play the cello yourselves! I'll be here for pointers. Peace, love and rosin, Burton

Hello! Thanks again for that silly mix up with the end pin...
I've longed to learn how to play the cello... it's such a beautiful instrument, and I actually bought a really cheap but very good one for about $100 in a pawn shop. I love it, so. But I can't play it. Zoe Keating actually called me an 'honorary cellist' once, lol. It's really cool to mess around with because it's one of those instruments you can just "bang on" and it sounds good.
But yeah... welcome to the forums!

Hi! I've taken to saying "tail spike" now. And I wonder if Zoe Keating has ever captured the sound of her endpin sliding in and out for her wonderful loops...
It's been said that the guitar is the easiest instrument to play, and the most difficult instrument to play *well*. Not so with the cello! It takes time and patience to get decent tone. Start up a thread in the musicians' section; I'll be there.
Peace, love and rosin, Burton

I guess what I meant was, given an hour, I can teach someone how to strum a few basic chords. Maybe even impress a few people! But with a bowed instrument, there's a steeper learning curve on the front end. In my opinion, anyway. Banging on the cello is cool, but playing a single note, and making that note beautiful, takes a little time.

I've started teaching a few adult beginners and yeah, cello's hard.
If it makes you feel any better, withheadphones, I can't play guitar at all either. Totally different lefthand technique.
