Mine is Vermeer, a then little-known 17th-century Dutch master from Delft. He ran a gallery out of his boarding-house on the "new" main square of Delft, across from the New Church, which is to say the Protestant church. Never sold many of his own paintings, but was recognized by his fellow painters as the master he was; twice he was appointed head of the Guild. We have fewer than forty of his achingly beautiful canvases now. I find echoes of his touch for light and space and the tension of leaving things unsaid in the shattering spaces-between of songs like The Next Flower. www.essentialvermeer.com/framed/framed_open.html
